- Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease that damages the optic nerve and can lead to vision loss or blindness if left untreated.
- Glaucoma is very dangerous and sight threatening disease, occurring mostly in middle aged men and women
- Early diagnosis is very important to prevent blindness, or visual loss in case of glaucoma
- Glaucoma can be detected early by good clinical examination combined with OCT examination and by perimetry (visual field examination)

Glaucoma management include -
- Medicines: nowadays very good medicines are available for glaucoma treatment.
- Lasers: in certain type of glaucoma (like acute angle closure and chronic angle closure glaucoma) only medicine doesn’t work.
- Laser procedure like YAG LASER IRIDOTOMY is necessary and compulsory. Early diagnosis also matters in this type of glaucoma to prevent blindness
- In a very few cases which are refractory to medicine and lasers, surgery is required
- Mostly antiglaucoma surgery is trabeculectomy.
